SAVANNAH (now ANNA) & HOLLY (now Haley)

Dear CAPS,

I wanted to take a moment to let you know how grateful I am to your organization.  Come February, it will have been a year since I euthanized my wonderful dog, Ben; friend and confidant for sixteen years, I never thought I would have another dog like him.  Thanks to you, it turns out that I have two!

Having to part with our elderly pets may be a part of life, but it is always difficult.  In my house, it just wasn't the same without the jingle of dog tags first thing in the morning, and a wet nose welcoming me home from work.  It was about that time that I saw a CAPS flyer up in Petsmart and decided to check out the web page.  Lo and behold, there were so many animals in need of a home...and my home was already dog-friendly!  It didn't take much for me to drop an email and link up with Marilee, one of the dedicated CAPS volunteers.  We chatted a bit and set up an appointment for me to visit some of the dogs she was fostering.

I arrived at Marilee's intending to see if she had an adult, male, large-breed dog that might enjoy my active lifestyle...and I left that day completely in love with two young, female, medium dogs of dubious parentage!  Just goes to show that you can't plan for cupid to strike, and it doesn't matter what your "type" is when he does!

When we completed the adoption paperwork a few days later, I floated out of Petsmart with Anna (a shepherd cross) and Haley (a lab/golden cross) simply knowing that it would all work out in spite of the pitfalls of socializing two such special and independent dogs not only with each other, but with the cat, rabbit and gerbils they'd be sharing space with.  I was confident that, between Marilee's assessment of their personalities and my own time with them, they would fit right in!

While it wasn't without it's challenges (the one dog fight they ever had started in the back yard and, with the cooperation of an unlocked back door, ended up with two very muddy and very tired dogs panting side by side on my kitchen floor...surrounded by muddy dog prints and walls that looked like a monster truck had rolled through) and surprises (who knew that Haley would have a knack for opening kitchen cabinets and enjoy lining all the canned goods up on the kitchen floor!?!), adopting these two was one of the best things I have ever done.  Not only do I have two wonderful four-legged friends, but they are both so clearly grateful to have a loving home!  They are both so well behaved that friends comment often on their willingness to please...though they certainly have plenty of personality!

I thought I'd include a couple of our "lounge" photos.  I'm sure Marilee remembers how nervous they both used to be...and will smile to see them so happy and relaxed!  Please give my best to all the volunteers, and accept my heartfelt thanks!  Whenever I hear that anyone is looking for a pet, I wholeheartedly recommend CAPS.  From the variety of pets, to the knowledgeable volunteers and the straight forward adoption process, I can't think of a better way to find a new friend and give a deserving animal another lease on life.

Thanks again!
